Cisco networking certification is valuable in today's Web 2.0 world. Not only is the knowledge useful but also listing a Cisco certificate of any kind on a resume can help job seekers obtain entry into the kinds of companies and jobs they desire and seek. Read on to learn how to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate.

    1. Find a school or training facility that offers training programs to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). Know that most well-rounded community colleges offer Cisco networking courses, however, many private training facilities offer the courses too.

    2. Understand that tuition costs may vary--community college courses for Cisco may cost the same as any other community college course, whereas enrolling in a continuing education or private training program may cost thousands of dollars more. Compare tuition prices before enrolling in Cisco courses.

    3. Visit the Cisco website to learn about levels and purposes of different certifications. Know that it is now recommended that students obtain the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) training before studying for their CCNA. Search regionally for Cisco approved training facilities and schools near you under the "Participating in the Program" link to become a CCNA.

    4. Know that Cisco certificate training requires progressive and successful completion of multiple courses per certificate block. Understand that weekly testing prepares learners for major cumulative testing, which leads to certification.

    5. Keep up with weekly readings, exercises and lab work, which are all crucial for successful completion of coursework—higher than average grades must be maintained for Cisco Academy approved coursework.

    6. Study online materials as well as text and lab books. Practice during lab exercises to grasp harder Cisco concepts to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate.

    7. Know that you can complete Cisco courses independently through an online school, but you will lack the hands-on training and experience needed (unless the online school has a Cisco lab in your town or city). Official Cisco Academy courses include a combination of course room lecture and online, text and hands-on lab instruction.

    8. Find out all details before enrolling in a Cisco certification program of any kind and make sure the school or training facility is Cisco approved. Become a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) once you have completed all coursework, course testing and the final certification tests.

    9. Take official certification tests at any Cisco approved location for an extra fee. See the difference between certificates awarded by your school and official certificates awarded by Cisco such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).

Advance your career by further developing your networking design skills learned while obtaining the CCDA. Become a CCDP to fine tune your knowledge and expertise of designing networks and grow your reputation as a networking professional. Master CCDP skills and impress employers, gain admiration from colleagues and earn well-deserved respect from your network technology peers.

Distinguish between the CCDA (or the Cisco Certified Design Associate) and the CCDP (or the Cisco Certified Design Professional). Realize a CCDP candidate must first complete not only CCDA training and pass certification testing but also CCNA training and certification. Become a CCDP and learn advanced intelligent network design principles and concepts after gaining knowledge of basic Cisco networking design with CCDA training.

Check out various certification tracks on the Cisco website. Know that the CCDP track is one of the 5 Professional track series. Locate Cisco approved training facilities and schools in your region with the "Participating in the Program" link if you've completed CCDA training in another town or state or want to switch schools where you are.

Realize that although many local colleges may offer Cisco networking courses, they may not offer higher level certification courses. Find private training facilities and online courses offering higher level Cisco networking certification curriculum. Compare courses and costs.

Recognize that Cisco networking certification training is intensive and tough; you know this if you've already completed requirements for the CCDA (and CCNA/CCENT). Prepare for the rapid pace, costs and tests.

Learn about discussing, designing and creating advanced architectures (including wireless) to become a CCDP. Finish the "Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI)," "Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)" and "Designing Cisco Network Service Architecture (ARCH)" training to test for and become a CCDP. Find programs taught by certified instructors that cover this Cisco approved CCDP curriculum.

Survey course details before signing up for a Cisco certification program and check out the school or training facility to make sure it is Cisco approved. Become a CCDP once you've successfully mastered the curriculum and completed the certification tests. Pass the 642-901 BSCI, 642-812 BCMSN and 642-873 ARCH or 642-871 ARCH required exams; or pass the 642-892 Composite and 642-871 ARCH required exams.

If you're interested in voice technology, and you've accomplished completing your CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) training/exam, work next toward professional certification and obtain the CCVP (Cisco Certified Voice Professional). Earn recognition in your field as a networking expert for integrated voice technology. Make an impression on potential as well as current employers and make your resume shine with professionalism once you become a CCVP.

    1. Take and pass the CCNA exam (and CCENT exam if needed) as a prerequisite for the CCVP. Learn to develop transparent, scalable and manageable telephony solutions to become a CCVP.

    2. Look at different certificates at the professional level via the Cisco website. Choose the CCVP out of many professional certifications offered. Click the "Participating in the Program" link to uncover Cisco approved training facilities and schools in your vicinity if you've moved or would like to simply switch training facilities.

    3. Know that typically community colleges have Cisco networking programs, but they don't always offer higher level certification programs. Seek other types of training facilities and online courses for higher level Cisco networking certification training. Calculate and compare costs as well as courses.

    4. Pump up for CCVP coursework since it involves as much, if not more, work as CCNA coursework. Get organized and ready for intensive training and additional costs and testing.

    5. Implement, operate, configure and troubleshoot converged IP networks. Become a CCVP and learn about technologies, such as CallManager, QoS, gateways/gatekeepers and voice applications.

    6. Grasp information from the "Quality of Service (QOS)"/"Cisco Voice over IP (CVOICE)" plus "Cisco Voice over IP Fundamentals (CVF)"/"Troubleshooting Cisco Unified Communications Systems (TUC)"/"IP Telephony Troubleshooting (IPTT)"/"Cisco IP Telephony Part 1 (CIPT1 4.1)" plus "Cisco IP Telephony Part 2 (CIPT2 4.1)" or "Cisco IP Telephony Part 1 (CIPT1 5.0)" plus "Cisco IP Telephony Part 2 (CIPT2 5.0)" plus "Implementing Cisco Voice Gateways and Gatekeepers (GWGK) training courses to become a CCVP. Make sure programs are taught by certified instructors and cover the Cisco-approved CCVP curriculum.

    7. Find out about course details before paying for a Cisco certification program and double check to see if the school or training facility is Cisco approved. Become a CCVP once you've successfully mastered the curriculum and completed the certification tests. Pass the 642-642 QOS/642-432 CVOICE/642-426 TUC or 642-425 IPTT/642-444 CIPT 4.1 or 642-445 CIPT 5.0/642-453 GWGK required exams.
