    General Information

    CCIE Security Written Exam #350-018
The written exam is a two-hour, multiple choice test with 100 questions covering areas such as security protocols, operating systems, application protocols, security technologies, and Cisco security applications. The exam is closed book and no outside reference materials are allowed.

    Study Tips

Read, do some hands-on practice, and read some more. This exam will "test" your knowledge of the tiny details that you thought you would never have to know or considered to be trivial. Whatever you thought was trivial may be very important on 350-018 test.

Hands-on practice is very important. What do the output of Windows and Unix networking and security commands look like? What do output of router IOS security and status commands look like? How can those commands be used or modified? If you had a large network, how would you use those commands differently?

Think real-world security! This isn't a "two router" network exam. This is a real-life "I have a network that is connected to the Internet, what are the real security concerns, how do I configure my network, how do I know what is going on, how do I handle each of the A's in AAA, etc."

    Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

Candidates have the option of gaining the certification by passing two tests (ICND1 640-822 and ICND2 640-816), or one single test (CCNA 640-802); the two-test option has the advantage of allowing the candidate to focus on certain subjects.

The certification is valid for three years; at that time a CCNA holder must either

    • re-take the CCNA or ICND exam, or

    • take and pass an exam for one of the Professional (e.g., CCNP) or Specialist level certifications (excluding the sales specialist exams), or pass the CCIE written exam.

These exams are known by their corresponding numbers. When the curriculum of the exam changes the exam number also changes. The current exam number for CCNA is 640-802 (from 15 Aug 2007). New ICND Part1 (640-822 ICND1) and ICND Part2 (640-816 ICND2) available from Aug 2007. Part 1 by itself will give you a CCENT.

These exams are conducted by authorized test centers at a cost of $125 USD each for the ICND1 or ICND2 exams and, effective 06.23.2008, $250 USD for the full CCNA exam.

There is also the Cisco Networking Academy, which brings the CCNA and CCNP curricula into traditional educational institutions in over 150 countries. Students enrolled in Cisco Networking Academy can request exam vouchers that allow them to take the retired exam for an extended period of time.

Step 1. Before taking a closer look at preparation resources, first take a look at the Written Exam Blueprint.

Step 2. Carefully consider how strong you are in relation to each of the objectives, then you may decide to approach the blueprint in a top-down fashion - just start with CallManager, and run through the objectives one-by-one. Or you may decide to fill in the gaps with subjects where are stronger before tackling those subjects where you are weaker. Or you may even decide to tackle the toughest subjects first, while enthusiasm is highest! Otherwise, take some substantial effort!

Step 3. It's probably best to set aside a certain amount of time every day to study for 350-030 exam, and stick to that schedule. You may find it useful to (briefly) record in a journal what exam preparation you do every day.

Step 4. Have a look at study resources that you can use in preparing for the exam. The resources include CallManager, QoS, Telephony Protocols, Unity, IOS IP telephony skills, IP IVR/IPCC Express, Security, Infrastructure protocols, Application Protocols, Operation and Network Management.

Step 5. So, you have stepped through all the study resources mentioned in step 4, and you are almost ready to book the exam. Find one resource that will help you to quickly fill in any gaps in your knowledge.

Step 6. At this point, you'll be ready to book your exam. It is worth mentioning time management for the exam. Don't forget that there are 100 questions to answer in 120 minutes. So, that's just a little over a minute per question. Don't get sucked into spending too much time on one question. If you have a problem with a question, mark it and go back to it at the end.
